Recently, it seems as if some members in our communities have lost their sense of reason. As the riots, which started in London, spread to other cities in the UK, the general public seemed to get the impression that the random and uncontrolled violence was due to something in the air, when the causes of violence may have been due to other factors such as boredom and poverty. Intentionally causing harm to other individuals or property is a serious problem today.

Previous studies have relied almost exclusively on self-report questionnaires to assess appraisals; consequently we know little about perceptions that occur naturally when children witness interparental aggression. This study employed a semi-structured interview to assess the thoughts and feelings of 34 children ages 7—12 whose mothers were receiving services at domestic violence agencies, and mothers reported on interparental aggression that took place in the home. Sadness and anger were more common than anxiety, and children often attempted to stop or withdraw from fights or both. These findings support the idea that children actively attempt to understand the causes and consequences of interparental violence and suggest that their perceptions and interpretations are important for understanding the development of beliefs regarding the use of violence in close relationships. This topic looks at how to confront and prevent potential negative outcomes in children exposed to social violence and how to intervene and set up the necessary resources. Violence exposure in the lives of children includes both indirect forms of witnessing and direct forms of victimization across family and community contexts. Violence includes physical, emotional and sexual forms. We focus here predominantly on physical violence exposure.
Some tragedies are unintentional and unpredictable, such as traffic accidents or natural disasters. Others are intentional and sometimes premeditated, such as fights, muggings, shootings, murders, and terrorist attacks. When children are exposed to a traumatic event, including a violent crime, their response may vary. Some children become fearful. They may prefer to stay at home, and they may have trouble sleeping and concentrating in school.
