Maritime structures — Part 7: Guide to the design and construction of breakwaters

The ICE Coasts, Maritime Structures and Breakwaters conference series, sponsored by the ICE for over thirty years, is the leading international forum for the presentation of the latest developments in coastal and maritime engineering. The eleventh conference, Realising the Potential , was held in Liverpool from 5th to 7th September Across the three days, it was attended by over delegates and saw 90 papers presented. The topics for focused on describing the design, construction, analysis and performance of a wide range of maritime structures. The contents contain the latest research and developments and up-to-date guidance and innovations as well as practical lessons learned from experience. The 90 papers presented here cover a diverse range of topics including construction in ports working in marine environments challenges at the coast coastal developments breakwater armour ecological aspects of design developments in overtopping waves on structures.

Due to the hostile environment, it is vital to protect port and marine structures against deterioration. The damaging effects of chlorides in seawater, as well as the aggressive action of waves and currents plus carbonation attack, can all drastically reduce the design life of coastal defences, wharfs and jetties, leading to expensive maintenance bills and at worst, force premature demolition. In the case of reinforced concrete structures, the steel reinforcement is protected against corrosion by the inherent highly alkaline environment of the concrete created by the release of calcium hydroxide from the cement hydration. This results in the formation of a passivating layer of ferric oxide on the embedded steel. As long as this surface film is maintained, the steel remains protected from corrosion. However, when concrete structures are repeatedly exposed to salt spray or submerged in saltwater, chloride ions — due to their minute size — penetrate the pores of the concrete, eventually reaching the steel, breaking down this layer and causing corrosion.

The need to protect port and marine structures

Port structures - the distribution of forces on infrastructure due to mooring and berthing of vessels. This work presents a study on the project actions required for the design and analysis of port structures, with regard to the impacts of mooring and berthing of vessels. The design procedures proposed by these different references regarding the computation of forces induced by mooring and berthing of vessels were evaluated in this work. The results showed a remarkable dispersion, revealing that the standards used strongly influence the design loads of port structures. The construction of ports and docks is among the first major developments of human civilization.
