The Trial Balance is, as the name suggests, is a table where we lay out all our debit accounts and all our credit accounts to see if they balance or not. A trial balance is important because it acts as a summary of all of our accounts. In fact, we can immediately see the balance of every single account in our business. Why Trial Balance is important?

What is a Trial Balance?

Trial Balance is a list of closing balances of ledger accounts on a certain date and is the first step towards the preparation of financial statements. It is usually prepared at the end of an accounting period to assist in the drafting of financial statements. Ledger balances are segregated into debit balances and credit balances. Asset and expense accounts appear on the debit side of the trial balance whereas liabilities, capital and income accounts appear on the credit side. If all accounting entries are recorded correctly and all the ledger balances are accurately extracted, the total of all debit balances appearing in the trial balance must equal to the sum of all credit balances. Trial Balance only confirms that the total of all debit balances match the total of all credit balances. Trial balance totals may agree in spite of errors.

The ledger is rightly called the centerpiece of the accounting system. The system and the organization's financial reports are "all about" ledger accounts—account balances and transaction histories. The ledger provides the transaction history and current balance in each accounting system account, throughout the accounting period. At the end of the period, ledgers, therefore, serve as the authoritative source of data for building a firm's financial accounting reports. Sections below further define, explain and illustrate ledger in context with related terms and concepts, emphasizing three themes:. Visit the Master Case Builder Shop.

A trial balance is a list of all the balances in the nominal ledger accounts. It serves as a check to ensure that for every transaction, a debit recorded in one ledger account has been matched with a credit in another. If the double entry has been carried out, the total of the debit balances should always equal the total of the credit balances.

One of the first steps in analyzing a business transaction is deciding if the accounts involved increase or decrease. However, we do not use the concept of increase or decrease in accounting. The meaning of debit and credit will change depending on the account type. Debit simply means left side; credit means right side. Remember the accounting equation?

A ledger account also known as T-account consists of two sides — a left hand side and a right hand side. In the rest of the discussion we shall use the terms debit and credit rather than left and right. When a financial transaction occurs, it affects at least two accounts.
