Handbook of Market Research pp Cite as. Among other methodologies, field experiments conducted in online and offline environments are rapidly changing the way companies make business decisions. This chapter explains why field experiments are a reliable way to reveal and to prove that a business action results in a desired outcome and provides guidelines on how to perform such experiments step by step covering issues such as randomization, sample selection, and data analysis. Various practical issues in the design of field experiments are covered with the main focus on causal inference and internal and external validity. We conclude the chapter with a practical case study as well as a brief literature review on recent published articles employing field experiments as a data collection method, providing the reader with a list of examples to consider and to refer to when conducting and designing a field experiment.

Field Experiments: Design, Analysis, and Interpretation

This article presents an overview of field experiments and their contribution to the study of political behavior. First, it briefly outlines the history of field experimentation in political science and neighboring disciplines. It then summarizes a series of important and interrelated research literatures, exploring the influences of political campaigns, political communication, and political socialization.

This article evaluates the strengths and limitations of field experimentation. It first defines field experimentation and describes the many forms that field experiments take. It also interprets the growth and development of field experimentation. It then discusses why experiments are valuable for causal inference. The assumptions of experimental and nonexperimental inference are distinguished, noting that the value accorded to observational research is often inflated by misleading reporting conventions. The article elaborates on the study of natural experiments and discontinuities as alternatives to both randomized interventions and conventional nonexperimental research.
