Association between Hand Digit Ratio (2D : 4D) and Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
This has often been used as an indicator of the levels of prenatal androgen exposure. It has hence been suggested to have a role in many gender differences including performance in sports. Men generally outperform women in most physical abilities. However, reports in various studies have been inconclusive, depending upon the physical ability tested. Hence, we decided to determine the relationship between 2D:4D and HGS of both hands in men and women. Methods: Scanned images of both hands of young volunteers were analysed and the 2D:4D ratio calculated. HGS was measured and results correlated with 2D:4D.

The objective of this study was to examine whether circulating concentrations of sex hormones and SHBG measured in adulthood was associated with 2D:4D. The digit ratio is the ratio of the lengths of different digits or fingers. The 2D:4D ratio is the most studied digit ratio and is calculated by dividing the length of the index finger of a given hand by the length of the ring finger of the same hand. A number of studies have shown a correlation between the 2D:4D digit ratio and various physical and behavioral traits. The digit length is typically measured on the palmar ventral hand, from the midpoint of the bottom crease where the finger joins the hand to the tip of the finger. The ratio of two digits in particular — the palmar 2nd index finger and 4th ring finger — is affected by fetal exposure to hormones , in particular to testosterone , and other androgens ; this 2D:4D ratio can be considered a crude measure for prenatal androgen exposure, with lower 2D:4D ratios pointing to higher prenatal androgen exposure.
Sex-typed play behavior shows large sex differences and seems to be affected by prenatal sex hormones. For example, a smaller, more male-typical ratio between the second and fourth digit length 2D:4D , a proposed marker for prenatal testosterone exposure, has been shown to be related to sex-typed play preference in childhood. Nevertheless, it is still being debated whether 2D:4D displays a stable sex difference throughout childhood, as there are few longitudinal studies.

Many researchers are pursuing research programmes aimed at elucidating the effects of early testosterone exposure on later development outcomes, especially behavior. These include both experimental work with animal models and a large body of work in human psychology that have focused on the role of early testosterone action on behavioral sex differentiation [ 1 ].
